NEWS...
SUMMER SHOW 2006- Wow!  What a month.  So, as many of you know we had quite a large grand opening and artist reception on the 29th of July.  Special thanks to Inside Columbia, the artists, and to all who were in attendance making it a huge success.  If you haven't seen the summer show, which runs until the 7th of October, it includes new works from the following artists: Julie Hansen, Amy Mack, Brian Mahieu, Patricia Oblack, Susan Farrar Parrish, Bob Rynearson, Joel Sager, and Josephine Stealey.  We are very proud of this show and our new space, and we hope all are able to view the Summer Show before its conclusion.

THE ALCOVE...
Right now we are hosting the C.A.R.E. (Columbia Arts Related Experience) Gallery show in The Alcove sponsored in conjunction with C.A.R.E. Gallery  featuring work by young talented artists.  This program was started by C.A.R.E. (Career Awareness Related Experience), which serves employment and training needs of disadvantaged youth, ages 14-18.  Proceeds from this show go to C.A.R.E and to facilitate future shows and employment. For more information concerning the show, contact us at (573)442-4831 or email us at art@perlow-stevensgallery.com.  To get involved with our friends at C.A.R.E. (as a student, instructor, or to commission artwork) contact them at 573-874-6300 or CAREgallery@GoColumbiaMo.com.  A majority of the show sold at the opening, so be sure to visit soon in order to support and collect original work by some of Columbia's youngest  artists.

COMING SOON...
Kids on Culture- Next season we begin our event, Kids on Culture, which involves quarterly art educational sessions and tours for children.  Various fundamental art concepts will be discussed during the session and applied throughout the tour to paintings showing at the time.  This event is FREE and open to children of all ages accompanied by a responsible adult.  Keep track of this and all upcoming events on our events page  www.perlow-stevensgallery.com/events.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH...
This month's artist, Patricia Oblack, paints abstracts in acrylic relying successfully on texture and color to conjure imagery of distressed architecture reminiscent of beautiful ruins with compositional homage to Mark Rothko.  Oblack utilizes tools other than the conventional brush to create her pieces: palette knife, dental tools, heat gun, rolling pin, wire brush to name a few.  The effect of these is evident in the surface of Oblack's body of work, which shows various degrees of destructed relief, pattern and texture.  This is complimentary and visually congruent with the subdued color palette in that it too is seemingly weathered and distressed.  The occasional burst of pure color peeks out behind all of this like bits of original paint on an old door unhinged from a lost civilization.  This combined with similar compositions to Abstract Expressionist Color Field painter Mark Rothko (and sometimes also to the latter's grandeur of painting dimensions as Oblack's largest piece is almost eight feet wide) forges a visual delight for anyone with an affinity toward modernity with a relic aesthetic.
